Cholesterol is a very misunderstood compound in the body. It does not provide any calories because we don’t digest it. It’s an important function to the body. It is used to make sterol hormones and bile salts and to maintain the structure of cell membranes.  Without cholesterol the body cannot produce hormones, vitamin d and maintain the membranes of our cells, or breakdown and digest fats.

Cholesterol comes from food (dietary cholesterol) and is also produced in your body (blood cholesterol).  No matter were the cholesterol comes from if a person follows a healthy lifestyle and dietary habits his body is capable of handling excess cholesterol. If a person leads an unhealthy lifestyle, no control over his diet then the body will have excess cholesterol which travels to bloodstream and gets oxidized.

CHOLESTREOL

LDL and HDL

The two main forms are HDL (good cholesterol) or High Density Lipoprotein and LDL (bad cholesterol) or Low Density Lipoprotein. When you do not provide your body with sufficient antioxidants like Vitamin A, C and E which is found in fruit, vegetables, leafy green vegetables and good quality protein LDL starts to get oxidized faster. LDL has higher fatty acids and low protein compared to HDL.

Lowering LDL

There are measures to lower your LDL cholesterol. BMI is great starting point. A high BMI is linked to high LDL. Loosing weight and changing bad nutrition habbits is the key in reducing bad cholesterol as well as heart disease. 20 minutes of moderate aerobic exercise each day such as fast walking, jogging and swimming can lower your LDL by 5-10 %. All saturated and trans fat must be excluded from your diet. Foods should be based on fresh natural source which are high in fiber, vitamins and minerals.
